Cooling down – conducting a carbon footprint for Marshfield Ice Cream

3Keel worked with Marshfield Ice Cream, a Wiltshire-based family business, to understand its emissions profile.

For over 30 years, Marshfield Ice Cream and its herd of over 250 British Fresian cows has been producing ice cream sold across the UK.

In 2022, Marshfield approached 3Keel seeking advice on its journey to B-Corp accreditation. We recognised that an important step towards this goal was to understand their carbon footprint, which led to a project in which we assessed their greenhouse gas emissions, identified emission hotspots and began the process of setting emission reduction targets.

“We are a work in progress. We started the journey with Finlay Kenneth and his team at 3Keel LLP to help carbon footprint our whole ice cream business. The results of this and of what we currently do here at Marshfield Farm Ice Cream are in our first ever Impact Report.”

Marshfield Impact Report 2022

After an initial scoping discussion to understand the business and identify emissions sources and available data, we conducted a footprint of Marshfield’s entire business across scope 1, 2 and 3. From the commute into the farm by their staff, all the way through to shipping the finished tubs across the UK, every chocolate chip and drop of milk was accounted for.

Rum-n-raising the bar:

Importantly, the project has equipped Marshfield with the information needed to target specific areas of its supply chain, creating a targeted strategy to address their emissions.
