As new guidance emerges around net zero, scope 3, FLAG, land-use change and deforestation, companies need to ensure the relationship between corporate carbon claims and supply chain action is robust. Without careful interpretation, there is a risk that changes in baselines, accounting approaches or evidence requirements could be presented as progress that has not actually been achieved.

This webinar will focus on the key ‘carbon watchouts’ for companies making or communicating claims about supply chain decarbonisation, so that you can be clear on what you can credibly claim.

Join experts from 3Keel and the Accountability Framework initiative (AFi) as we explore the biggest credibility risks and what businesses need to get right if they want their scope 3 claims to stand up to scrutiny.

This 60 minute session includes a Q&A.

Context

Agricultural commodities are a major source of greenhouse gas emissions, through both production and land-use change, including deforestation. Companies have responded through deforestation- and conversion-free commitments, supplier programmes and other supply chain interventions.

At the same time, the rules governing how these activities can be reflected in corporate carbon accounts are evolving.

Developments in the SBTi Net-Zero Standard, Land Sector and Removals Standard and product environmental footprinting are creating new questions about how companies establish baselines, attribute reductions and demonstrate that reported progress represents a real-world rather than just an accounting change.

This matters because seemingly small methodological choices can have a major impact on both how companies focus their deforestation efforts as well as the emissions reductions a company is able to report.

What to expect from the webinar

We will examine where commodity sourcing, deforestation commitments and Scope 3 carbon accounting will create issues, highlighting where you need to proceed with particular care.

We’ll explore:

  • what FLAG targets and DCF commitments expect companies to deliver
  • where carbon and DCF strategies align and where their different approaches can create tensions
  • how SBTi Net Zero v2.0 and the Land Sector and Removals Standard change the way reductions are calculated and reported
  • why mischaracterising an initiative as a reduction when there is no real-world impact may expose a company to greenwashing allegations
  • key considerations for your comms teams as you begin to report on your deforestation and carbon efforts.

Who should attend

  • Sustainability and climate leads responsible for scope 3, FLAG targets and corporate net-zero strategies within food & beverage, FMCG and other commodity-dependent businesses.
  • Communication and press team leads that are responsible for writing reports and sharing progress externally.
  • Carbon accounting and reporting teams navigating evolving requirements for land-sector emissions and scope 3 claims.
